Van Diemen's Band | Cloak & Dagger

Recorded live at Theatre Royal (2024)

Buried secrets, double meanings and encrypted emotions from England's most turbulent century.

Curated by VDB Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff, this fascinating program traverses songs by John Dowland, witches dances, hop-soaked protest songs from bawdy taverns, new settings of the propaganda-laden Broadside Ballads, and more.

In typical VDB style, Cloak & Dagger recontextualises these songs for the modern day, opening a portal into the hearts and minds of people in an age of political turmoil, religious upheaval and social revolt - all themes that continue to resonate today.

Van Diemen's Fiddles | Homeward

Recorded live at St Canice Sandy Bay (2021)

Van Diemen’s Fiddles perform a haunting and evocative journey through a thousand years and myriad cultures.

The medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen mixes with contemporary Tasmanian composer (and VDF member) Emily Sheppard, and Jewish klezmer blooms among tunes from Scotland, Ireland, England and Denmark, through the Balkans to Turkey and beyond.

The musicians, who comprise three of Lutruwita/Tasmania’s most versatile instrumentalists, mined their own cultural heritages and experiences to compile this exploration of ‘home’. Honouring the world’s rich cornucopia of folk traditions, Homeward is a nostalgic dream – a memory of that place where melodies live.
