Providing pathways for Australia's emerging artists
VDB passionately believes in providing pathways for Australia's emerging practitioners in historically-informed practice. Opportunities to extend our skills and learn from world-leading practitioners are fewer here than in Europe or the USA - so we take every opportunity to bring artists together when and where we can.
Our educational academies are intensive rehearsal, workshop and mentoring experiences that provide a "boot camp" immersion into an aspect of our practice.
Our next academy is planned to take place in 2025.
Summer Ornamentation Academy
February 2023
In February 2023, musicians from across Australia came together in nipaluna/Hobart to develop their skills in ornamentation across multiple genres, with the artists of Van Diemen’s Band and Ensemble Kaboul.
Italian Baroque Summer School
March 2020
In March 2020 we delivered a multi-day deep dive into the music of the Italian Baroque.
Originally planned to feature Italian Baroque violinist Enrico Gatti and bassoonist Elena Bianchi, the global COVID outbreak meant that the Academy was delivered with an all-Australian tutor lineup.
French Baroque Summer School
January 2018
We had a ball immersing ourselves in the sumptuous sounds of the French Baroque during our inaugural Summer Sessions. The Academy attracted 40 participants of all ages from all over Australia, and the final concert was a stunning success, with everybody combining forces for a beautiful concert.
